Process
With an extensive background in both traditional and digital art, Pat Rawlings has the ability to do one or the other exclusively or combine the two mediums into a “tradigital” image. I use freehand sketching and painting, digital drawing or painting on a tablet, photography, and 3D modeling in order to achieve the desired result.
Summit
This painting of asteroid exploration was created using traditional paintbrush and airbrush.
Fillup
This digital image for NASA’s Kennedy Space Center began with pencil concept sketches, then the creation of 3D computer graphic models. These models were posed, lit and rendered in a virtual Mars valley.
Crisis Breadbasket Mural
This exterior mural was created with a mixture of 3D models, photography, and digital painting on a computer. Then individual pieces were sent to an outside vendor, printed in black and white and then cut out using patterns I provided on a CNC router. These pieces were painted by Rawlings with archival acrylic paint and then mounted on the building using layers to create a 3D effect.
Tidehaven ISD Tiger Mural
This interior mural in a FEMA dome gymnasium was created on a computer using digital painting on a 27” wide tablet with a stylus. It was output as a 53’ wide by 35’ tall vinyl print in 4’ wide strips which are installed by craftsman that specialize high end installations.
